Transforming Kelburn Campus
The Campus Hub Redevelopment Project will create a world-class campus with a central heart and improved social and study areas.
The project is being jointly funded by the University and the Victoria University of Wellington Students’ Association Trust (VUWSAT). The Student Trust plans to contribute $12 million in funding over fifteen years to help upgrade the campus. The Student Trust is targeting its financial support to the aspects of the project that offer students the most direct benefit.
The Student Trust’s ongoing involvement in the project has resulted in the University incorporating many student ideas, including particular aspects that student representatives wanted. This is where the greatest degree of student money is going – in particular the redevelopment of the Quad, improving the Student Union Building and the development of designated clubs and representative group spaces.
The Campus Hub project will be better for students because of the Student Trust’s involvement.

How will students benefit from the project?
Students have voted to continue the Student Trust’s support for the project so will be able to make the most of hugely improved facilities.
- New, dedicated clubs and representative group space in the Student Union Building, including secure storage facilities, casual meeting rooms and social areas.
- A bar, also serving food, within the Student Union Building which will be more attractive and inviting than the current facilities.
- It will be easier to have gigs on campus and the redevelopment will create a space that bands will want to play in, with upgraded acoustic qualities and sound facilities, and streamlined entry and exit for concerts.
- The music venue will accommodate considerably more people than the current space (over 1,000 for most gigs) and everyone will be able to see the stage at the same time. Bands in 2010 will play in this much better space.
